Mayor's Message for November 13th, 2020

Cabbage Field

We have frosty mornings. Winter vegetables in the fields. Next few days bring highs in the 60’s, some clouds but also lots of sunshine. Yes, it’s Friday the 13th.  Let’s just leave it there and enjoy the day.

The Old Church is a civic treasure and this week she got some well-deserved attention in the Albuquerque Journal.  Please read on for some of what makes her special. https://www.abqjournal.com/1515745/stillness-settles-over-a-corrales-landmark.html

C3’s Bistro, our new restaurant featuring Cajun cuisine, got a nice write-up in the Albuquerque Journal Business magazine. https://www.abqjournal.com/1515973/c3s-bistro-dishes-local-fare-new-orleans-flair.html.  Did I mention they make beignets? Please check them out; as with all our restaurants, they have safe dining options for you. For more information about our businesses see: visitcorrales.com.

Kudos to local resident and former Village Councilor John Alsobrook, whose medical research laboratory Adaptive Biotechnologies of Seattle, was featured in a New York Times article.  The laboratory has developed a T cell test to detect immune response to the coronavirus better than a widely used antibody test. Subject to FDA approval, it may be the first commercially available test of its kind. Impressive. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/10/health/t-cell-test-coronavirus-immunity.html.

The Village continues to distribute CARES Act monies to local businesses. Our deadline for applications is up and we are doing our final review of applications next week.  We are working together to make sure they survive and thrive.

COVID is on the rise. Corrales stands at 69 cases and for the past few days, we’ve gained about 3 cases per day. The governor is speaking this afternoon and the latest PHO information will be posted on our website under the COIVD-19 banner. There is no magic bullet but no need to panic either. Stay home when you can and be MAD (wear a Mask, Avoid groups and social Distance). Make every decision as if your health and that of your neighbors depend upon it, because it does. When we make safe choices, we save lives.

To that end, the Village is creating a multi-front public safety campaign. Why now? Because we are all tired and need a little boost to encourage our staying on track and COVID safe.

So, please enjoy the wonderful, very Corrales jingle signs posted along Corrales Road. Created by Arlene Thomas and painted by Dave Cross, it’s their special pandemic edition meant to bring us both joy and resolve. You know their signs from Music in Corrales events. Thank you to Arlene and Dave, Music in Corrales and Corrales MainStreet for making this happen.

Also, Corrales MainStreet is working with local businesses to help staff and customers to stay safe. Right now, you can get a free Corrales mask at most businesses. Show support for our Village and our business community by wearing a Corrales mask.

Next, stay alert for a Village of Corrales safety video. It highlights our employees – you know them – and how important it is to protect them so they can continue to do their jobs and keep you safe. We hope it will be ready for prime-time next week.

Village employees deserve to be proud of the job they’ve done during this pandemic. They have provided you uninterrupted high-quality service. Nonetheless, however mighty, it is a small staff and there’s a huge surge in cases. Therefore, I have asked that they be especially careful now and stay safe. Thank you for your support and understanding.

This weekend, you can bundle up, go outside and celebrate colder temperatures and bright skies. Or, you can celebrate from inside your toasty home. Whatever you do, stay safe and well, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
