Mayor's Message for November 22nd 2019

liam knight pond

As we move through November, we’ve enjoyed beautiful sunny days and now, much needed rain with even a moment or two of wet snow.

Corrales Clean Up Day was a great success - over 165 vehicles came and dropped off unwanted items. The Village got a big helping boost from 38 members of 4-H. Thank you so much! There will be another Next Clean Up Day in spring, so don’t despair. When next you are over at the Liam Knight Pond, look for the wonderful bird sculptures done by the late John Kayser and installed last week by the Parks and Recreation Department. The Village really appreciates the donations and they add a lot to the area.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Corrales Fire Department and I teamed up with the Corrales Elementary School K-Kids and the wonderful staff of Albertsons Market at 10131 Coors to kick off the Corrales Holiday Food Drive. There were pie eating contests! One extremely smart participant wore a scuba mask. The Corrales Fire Department Food Drive is ongoing until December 16 and with everyone’s help, we will feed 50-60 local families. Many thanks to Darrell and James from Albertsons for being such enthusiastic sponsors of this outreach.

But there’s more! The Holiday Giving Tree is ready for you in the Village Office. The tree is festooned with tags denoting a specific gift for a child. Come and take a tag, purchase the item and return it, wrapped or unwrapped, to the Village Office. Along with the donated food, these gifts of clothes and toys brighten the holidays for dozens of our neighbors. And every year, the generosity of Villagers is something to behold. Thank you.

Do you love storytelling? Come to the Old Church Saturday at 4 pm. for Tellabration. Entry fee. For more information, visit storytellersofnewmexico.org/directory.

On Sunday, visit the first winter market for Corrales Growers’ Market, from 11-1. Then, head to the Old Church Speakers’ Series at 2. Hear Lesley Poling-Kempes, author of Ladies of the Canyon, and learn about some fabulous women who helped shape New Mexico. Free. Corrales Historical Society sponsors many wonderful events, such as the Speakers’ Series. They are currently looking for a Treasurer. If you are interested, please let the Village know and we will pass on your name.

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving, a day when many of us gather with our families and friends to share food and fellowship. There’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and football. Some of you may have moved on, but many of us still need that green bean casserole with mushroom soup, those sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top and the canned cranberry sauce with ridges! Whatever’s on your holiday table, have  a wonderful day.

The Village Offices will be closed next Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29 for Thanksgiving.

The holiday feeling is upon us - please enjoy it, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake, Mayor
