Mayor's Message for November 6th, 2020

Corrales in Fall

Today the last of the yellow leaves are clinging to the trees, temps are crisp and our skies are blue. This weekend expect more clouds, wind and a chance for rain. Monday freeze so protect your fragile plants.

CARES ACT grants continue to reach more local businesses. The Village intends to distribute all these monies. For help, contact Tanya Lattin at tlattin [at] corrales-nm.org. Plus, you can help! Play Starry Daze Business Booster Bingo until the end of November. Shop for fun and for your town – let’s keep them going. (visitcorrrales.com)

On the government side, the Village is seeking CARES grant monies for improvements such as cleaner flooring and better air filtration systems that will make our municipal buildings healthier and safer for the public and Village employees alike.

Good news! Siphon Road is open again as MRGCD and SSCAFCA improvements are complete. See photos below.

Folks, the COVID situation is grim. Rates are high and in zip codes close to Corrales. Village cases have quickly risen to 56 (see chart below).  You and your family are not immune. No one is. Please help the Village and yourself by always wearing a mask, safe distancing and avoiding groups of more than 5. Check the Rapid Response Watchlist (www.env.nm.gov/rapid-response/) to make safe choices when you must go out. See the chilling details of dwindling hospital capacity and uncontrolled spread at: https://cv.nmhealth.org/newsroom/THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

November 11 is Veterans Day. For good reason, we celebrate veterans who have selflessly served in the military. We are grateful. This 2020 Veterans’ Day, let’s share that gratitude with first responders, medical helpers, teachers, public employees and all the workers who continue to get goods and groceries to us. As we struggle with COVID, there are so many people out there risking themselves so we can stay safe, fed and get schooling in our homes. Many of them have not had a break in 7 months. Please, think of them, thank them and be a hero for them by staying home and being COVID safe.

Our newly elected local officials are: State Senator Brenda McKenna (Dist. 9), Representatives Jane Powdrell-Culbert (Dist. 44) and Daymon Ely (Dist. 23) and Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block (Dist. 2). Congratulations. The Village looks forward to working with each of them. One of the pleasures of living here is that our elected representatives are quite responsive. In these times, that a real plus.

Now of course, the election you’ve all really been watching is CORRALES PET MAYOR! Spoiler alert: it’s Chip the Donkey. Please check out the rest of Chip’s animal cabinet at this local news update (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtrwJTuK1Ac). Chip was also featured in this morning's Albuquerque Journal.

Join the Village Council Meeting by zoom or telephone next Tuesday, November 10th at 6:30. For the Agenda and Public Packet visit.

These are anxious times, no doubt. One calming constant is the wonderful place where we all live. This weekend get out there in the fresh air (mask and leashes) and take a walk or a ride on our trails. Or watch football and binge-watch television. Whatever you do, enjoy yourself and protect each other, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake
