Mayor's Message for October 28th, 2022

Happy Halloween

Goblins, ghouls, witches, and vampires! Are we actually celebrating witchcraft and the devil? The short answer is no. Halloween is thought to have its roots in Christian beliefs and practices. The English word “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows Eve”, being the evening before the Christian holy days of All Saints’ Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2. This time frame was called Allhallowtide and was a time to pray for souls recently departed and to honor all saints. The Allhallowtide custom of baking and sharing cakes has been suggested as the origin of trick-or-treating. It was not until after mass Scottish and Irish immigration in the 19th century that Halloween became a major holiday in America.

A popular variant of trick-or-treating, known as Trunk-or Treating, Halloween tailgating, occurs when children are offered treats from the trunks of cars or beds of trucks parked in a selected area. In Corrales’ case, that would be the soccer field. You can all participate safely on October 31 at 6 PM.

The glass recycling bin has moved to its new location on Double S Road. To find it, turn onto Double S Road (just south of the Post Office off Corrales Road). The bin is located north of the Parks and Recreation front field. Please use caution when dumping glass in the bin, broken glass on the ground is a hazard to others. Please do not leave other trash or donation items next to this bin.

Although most residences in the village have an unmetered supply of water for their use, it is important to be judicious about the use of the water. When seasons change, we should change our watering programs. If we use sprinkler systems, we should be sure they are in a good functional state so as to not waste water. We should monitor the plants to be sure they are not over watered. The Village has a water conservation ordinance: Chapter 14, Article VI, Section 14-151 prohibits aerial sprinkling of lawns and landscaping between the hours of 11 AM and 7 PM daily. Flood irrigation from the canals and laterals regulated by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District is not affected by this ordinance. We all need to be good stewards of the land.

The Growers’ Market is winding down from the typical growing season, so take advantage while you can. Although there will be some produce during the winter season the quantity is often less. We have already had our first freeze of the fall. Winter is coming.

Colder weather is coming and with it, more people will be gathering inside. Being inside will increase the risk of respiratory virus transmissionNow is a good time to get both your Flu and COVID vaccines. If you are 65 or older, the “high dose Senior Flu” vaccine is recommended.  While the fire department does not have Flu vaccines, they do have COVID vaccine clinics 3 days a week for all age groups.  The Bivalent Omicron booster is now available for everyone five years and older who have completed their primary series and is at least two months from their previous dose of COVID vaccine. You do not need to wait for the State to send you an email to register for your vaccine.  Registration https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/stay-ahead-nm/. COVID Lab tested cases appear to be increasing. There were 1831 cases in New Mexico between October 15 and October 20.  There were 2305 between October 22 and October 27.  This is a 25.9% increase for the same six-day period over two weeks.  Corrales Fire has home COVID tests available for pickup. If you do test positive for COVID, there are several effective treatments available. Contact your primary care physician, or a list of treatment providers is available at https://findatreatmentnm.com/. Treatment needs to be started as soon as possible and most MUST be started within five days of illness.  If you need assistance, contact Commander Lattin at 505-702-4182.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and get your vaccines!
