Mayor's Message for October 2nd, 2020

Balloons at Dawn

Not sure how it happened, but it is now October. It’s warm for this time of year, but the chile is roasting and the pumpkins are in the fields.

A Corrales fire crew is now fighting the Glass fire in Napa Valley (only 2% contained). We hope they are well and will be safely back with us by the end on the month.

Corrales already has several successful CARES small business applicants. Each week we will strive to do grant review, grant award and grant training and we’ll be putting out a press release as grants are distributed. Village employees Tanya Lattin, Reyna Aragon, Lynn Siverts, Aaron Gjullin and Cindy Gomez deserve our thanks for their strong organizing efforts. Corrales is proud that we are offering “local to local” assistance. You can find our application and more information here: . Keep supporting our local businesses by playing “Starry Daze Business Booster Bingo.” Quite a tongue twister and this game’s afoot until the end of November. Details at: visitcorrales.com.

Corrales Community Library technology librarian Brynn Cole has been lending a hand in the Planning & Zoning Department this last month. Much appreciated and another excellent example of the cross-cooperation among our departments. Thank you, Brynn.

We have gained a few more days to be counted in the 2020 Census. Please, keep up the good work and spread the word. 2020census.gov. Every person counts!

Speaking of every person counts, please register to vote and then make a voting plan. You can vote absentee, early or on November 3rd.  Voting information can be found or by clicking 2020 General Election above and at NMVOTE.ORG.

And while you are voting, don’t forget we need a new Pet Mayor.  All proceeds benefit the Corrales Animal Services Department.

Old Church Annual Fine Arts Show has officially started! Please check out all the beautiful pieces at www.CorralesOldChurchShow.com. You can support our architectural treasure, the Old Church and local artists at the same time. https://www.whofish.org/events/Corrales/NM/32nd_Annual_Old_Church_Fine_Arts_Online_Show/5043016.aspx

COVID-19. Corrales is still holding at 37 cases and New Mexico is leading the country in providing essential safeguards for its constituents. BUT New Mexico is trending in the wrong direction. There’s a steep spike in cases. The Governor believes the current PHO is sufficient if we RECOMMIT. How? Wear that mask, keep your distance, no big groups and limit your activities as much as possible. If we do these things, we’ll see a downward trend in the next 10 days. Please - it is up to each of us. Thank you.

Balloons! No fiesta this year, but wind willing, we should be able to enjoy some balloons in our skies this weekend. So, get up early, round up some green chile burritos and enjoy the big sky show.

Halloween is on the way. Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Siverts is brewing up a small but fun event if we can stay within the PHO. Also, Corrales MainStreet is working with local businesses to put some festive fall decorations along Corrales Road. Details to follow. Let’s have a little (COVID- safe) fun!

The Corrales Growers’ Market is Sunday from 9-12. Get out in the glorious weather and enjoy the world. We are resilient, we are strong, and we are smart. We will manage this with grace, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
