Mayor's Message for October 30th, 2020

Snowy

Well, this week the weather seemed to match the mood. It’s feeling more normal now, but a reminder of the surprises New Mexico can always bring.

Couple of snow-related shout outs. First, to Rio Rancho, for once again clearing and salting Meadowlark for Corrales and also to Corrales Public Works, who had all our equipment prepped and ready even before the snowstorm was forecast. Thank you!

CARES grant distributions up to $108,000. 18 businesses have now been granted $108,000 in CARES monies. The Village has received authorization to increase the amount to $25,000 per business and is extending the deadline to apply. Even if you’ve already gotten an award, you may be eligible for the difference up to the $25,000 limit. Please contact Tanya Lattin at tlattin [at] corrales-nm.org. We are here to help! Please everyone, go out and support our local businesses.

Local Hero Recognition. So far, Corrales has recognized Linda Crowden, Jeff Radford and Mary Davis as people who lift-up our community as Local Heroes. They’ll each be getting their own Certificate of Appreciation in the mail. But we know there are more. Please, keep the nominations coming. Send the names of those neighbors and friends who are helping to make the world a better place to agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org.

Corrales wishes you a safe and Happy Halloween tomorrow. While normal activities like trick or treating and Trick ‘r Trunk are not happening this year, you know you bought the candy. So, what the heck. Stay home, eat the candy, read a ghost story and watch a spooky movie. In a 2020 twist, instead of putting on a mask, take it off (with a flourish) in the safety of your own home.  Visualize next year. Dozens of vehicles loaded with candy and ringed around a dozen glowing hot air balloons, with a roaring bonfire lighting up the night.

Time Change this weekend. This weekend we FALL BACK (lose an hour to daylight savings). So, don’t forget to turn back your clocks at the witching hour on Saturday night. Enjoy the extra hour on Sunday.

October 31 last day to VOTE EARLY. The last day to vote early is tomorrow at the Corrales Community Center (Administrative Complex). Vote in person on Election Day, Tuesday November 3 at the Recreation Center, from 7 am to 7 pm, 500 Jones Road. Or you can also vote at Sandia View Christian School, 7 am to 7 pm, 24 Academy Lane.

COVID 19 update. We are being hit hard. Corrales is up to 49 cases. Our hospital beds are filling up fast. If we don’t crush the curve, hospitals will be in emergency crisis mode in mid-December and seriously impact available care. The steps are the same – it’s a matter of public trust and mutual care for the benefit of ALL. Wear a mask, social distance and avoid gatherings of more than 5.  It will lower cases and safeguard our overburdened medical resources – and that means people too! Consider how tirelessly medical workers have been working since March. Talk about COVID fatigue! Be safe, for them and for us.

The government of is doing fine, but I am also thinking of you as individuals. There are a lot of anxiety producing events going on right now. If you think it would help, give yourself a moment to take a deep breath (or 2), quiet your mind and resolve to move ahead with purpose and joy. Don’t forget there are many resources listed on the COVID-19 banner to help you in these times. Don’t go it alone.

The Corrales Growers Market is open Sunday from 9-1. Weather is in the 60’s and mostly sunny so get out there on the trails and enjoy some fresh air. Whatever you do, stay safe and remember we are a strong caring community and we will thrive, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales.
