Mayor's Message for October 7th, 2022

Balloon Fiesta is coming to a close. The unexpected weather that came in slowed many of the events down but didn’t dissuade people from going out and having a good time. It was exciting to see so many different balloons and new special shapes this year with 22 different countries represented. You can watch the events live on the following website: https://balloonfiesta.com/Live-Stream.

Corrales is unique for a municipality of its size because residents are not served by centralized community water and wastewater systems. The developed properties contain individual domestic wells and on-site disposal systems, septic tanks, and leach fields. The lot sizes are generally sufficient to accommodate these individual systems, but the cumulative effects on the groundwater quality over time can be harmful. We need to be good stewards of the water that sustains both the Village and our neighbors.

October is national breast cancer awareness month. Early detection saves lives, and that life could be your own. Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. In 2022, an estimated 290,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. About one in eight women in the U.S. will get breast cancer at some point. For more information go to: https://www.nmhealth.org/about/phd/pchb/bcc.

October is also National Spina Bifida Month. Spina Bifida is a congenital defect in the spine that occurs during the first month of fetal development. It affects about 1600 babies each year. The worst type of this defect is called a meningomyelocele which occurs when the spinal cord and nerves come through the opening in the spine. To learn more visit: cdc.gov or https://www.spinabifidaassociation.org/.

The village offices will be closed on Monday, October 10th in observance of Indigenous People’s Day.

Four-time winner of International Western Music Association’s “Group of the Year” award, New Mexico-based Western music trio The Cowboy Way (Jim Jones, Doug Figgs, and Mariam Funke) will perform for Music in Corrales on Saturday, October 15 at 5:30pm at the Alfredo Garcia Community Barn, 6710 Rio Grande Blvd in Los Ranchos. Tickets are available at: www.musicincorrales.org.

Halloween is coming soon. I hope everyone is getting ready for Trunk or Treat. Corrales Parks and Rec will once again sponsor the activity, so start putting together your plans because there may be a prize! Get your candy ready - candy donations are  appreciated and can be dropped off at the Village administration office for the event, which will be on Monday, October 31 from 6 - 7 PM. If you would like to participate you can register by going to the Parks & Rec page on the Village website, and click on ‘Registration’. You can also click on ‘Recreation Programs’ for more information.

It may be time to fire up the furnace soon. Don’t forget about the carbon monoxide alarms in your house. Be sure the batteries are working if they are not hard wired.

Be warm, be safe, stay dry. Get your flu shot.
