Mayor's Message for October 9th, 2020

Monday is an official holiday in New Mexico, Indigenous People’s Day. It’s our chance to honor and appreciate the rich culture, tradition and heritage of first Americans. It is still hot, dry and a bit hazy; this weekend will bring winds to the mix. Fire is always a danger. For tips on fire safety.

VOTE! You can vote in person now at the Sandoval County Clerk’s Office, 1500 Idalia Rd., Bernalillo. Corrales early voting starts on October 17. Absentee ballots are arriving. Please check your registration information. If there’s a glitch, no worries - you can still register to vote in person until October 31. See for more info.

Census counting is extended until October 31. Please, every person counts. https://2020census.gov.

Zoom into the Virtual Town Hall next Monday, October 12 at 5:30. There will be an update on the state of the Village as to Covid-19. We will share ways to support local businesses and information about events planned to bring a little much needed fun into our lives. Find the link here.

So far, the Village has 9 local business CARES grants of almost $48,000. Read all about it in the weekly press releases that will be coming out soon. Congratulations! Grant monies are still available; to apply, contact Commander Tanya Lattin at 505-898-7501.

Village Council Meeting is Tuesday at 6:30. The Agenda and packet materials will be posted today on the website. The Agenda contains the zoom link to the meeting. If you do not have computer access there is a phone number and directions to allow you in. As always, if you have problems, please contact Village Clerk Aaron Gjullin at agjullin [at] corrales-nm.org or call him at 505-350-1583.

Local happenings? The Old Church Art Show is happening online. The virtual 2020 Harvest Festival (e.g., Pet Mayor, Pumpkin Palooza.) at http://corralesharvestfestival.com/. Plus, Corrales Poet Laureate Rudy Miera directed a short film about Maclovia Sanchez, a local curandera. Watch it for free at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb6GTPwswNU&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR24zxtBb2-qf7YBUDH6EJ12CnzyqNjDnZ-jiPJUZbzddyesPyLaZ7KZicM

COVID update. New Mexico cases are surging. The only silver lining is that while we got a 38th case this week, Corrales is doing ok. But our close neighbor Bernalillo County accounts for 1/3 of the cases. Too close for comfort! We must be MAD:  1) WEAR A MASK, 2) AVOID LARGE GROUPS and 3) SOCIAL DISTANCE. The largest contributors seem to be backyard parties, restaurants and bars and travel. Please, your health is the Village’s number 1 priority: practice (like) MAD and we’ll be ok.

Corrales Growers Market is on Sunday from 9-12. The weather will be perfect for going out on our trails and checking out the fall colors that are starting to burst onto the scene.  You can also take a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Historic Corrales Landmarks. For places to buy the $1 guide, go to https://www.corraleshistory.org/. Whatever you do, be safe and have fun, safe, Corrales-style.

Jo Anne Roake

Mayor of Corrales
