Mayor's Message for September 10th, 2021

American Flag

Well, as we barrel through September, the weather continues to be hot, with cool mornings but not much moisture. So, stay fire safe and keep using up all the produce!

Tomorrow is the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country. Please reflect on true patriotism: the bravery and selflessness of those who rushed to save people in the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Also, those courageous airline passengers who fought the hijackers and kept United Airline Flight #93 from its intended target, at the cost of their own lives. (See Neil Young’s tribute, “Let’s Roll” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-JfgnFnUL4.) Many first responders lost their lives or suffered long term health consequences and countless everyday people did all they could to help the injured and displaced. All deserve our highest respect. The Corrales Studio Art Tour (CAST) is this Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to Rick and Jacob Thaler for installing a beautiful wood bench at the pollinator garden in La Entrada Park. Now there is a great spot to sit and enjoy the flowers and see some busy bees at work.

Get those tickets for the Music in Corrales 2021-2022 season. Remember, Bobbie Shew’s Jazz Sextet performs September 18th in La Entrada Park (https://www.musicincorrales.org/current-season/).

New Mexico (and Corrales) is suffering a spike in COVID-19 cases and expects a new surge following Labor Day travel and activities. Because of this reality, the Harvest Festival and the 50th Anniversary Parade have been canceled. The Village and its wonderful volunteers must put your safety above all else. Thank you for understanding. Please keep yourself safe: get the vaccine, wear a mask and be situationally aware in crowded places. The Kiwanis Club of Corrales Foundation put out this press release:

"With a heavy heart, the Kiwanis Club of Corrales Foundation has made the extremely difficult decision to call off the 2021 Corrales Harvest Festival. Our Kiwanis values are centered around serving the children of our community and the world. We believe that the Festival secures and creates opportunities for children through our granting of the funds raised from the Festival primarily to organizations focused on the care and nurturing of children. Because we cannot control the environment of most of the major locations of the Festival in a way that offers protection for the safety of the children attending as well as the kind, generous people who volunteer to put on the Festival, we believe that staging the Festival this year may well put them at risk of coronavirus infections.

The Corrales Harvest Festival wishes to express its immense gratitude to all those who have given so generously of their time and dedicated their awe-inspiring energy to the planning of this year’s Festival. It has been so gratifying to have been the recipient of their many and valued talents.

We also want to thank the organizations and well over two hundred volunteers who offered their time to work during the Festival. We especially want to recognize the Village of Corrales administration and staff, The Corrales Tractor Club, The Corrales Historical Society, The Museum of Albuquerque’s Casa San Ysidro, CHAMP, Cibola and Rio Rancho HS Key Clubs, Rio Rancho HS Honor Society, UNM NROTC, UNM Women’s Rugby, Sandoval County Master Gardeners, and Road Runner Waste Services.

We hope to return next year with the same commitment to serving our children and our community through the biggest and best fun filled Corrales Harvest Festival ever. Thank you for your understanding."

Because of safety concerns, the upcoming Council Meeting (Tuesday the 14th at 6:30) will take place via Zoom. For the Agenda (which contains instructions on how to zoom in) and public packet.

This weekend, visit local artists and support their work. Don’t forget to shop the Corrales Growers’ Market – scoop up fresh produce and smell the green chile roasting on Sunday from 9-12.
