Mayor's Message for September 11th, 2020

Wasn’t it good to get some (really) cool weather and rain this week? The season is changing and it is wonderful to see the geese flying overhead every morning.

Today is September 11. Remember the innocents and heroes who perished in 2001 and reflect on the heroes who are still among us and will risk their lives to save ours.

Corrales fire fighters are coming home after helping battle the blazes in California. We should be so proud our crew could help. They also sent us a slideshow which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0cJ4i_oo4g

Keeping up the Old Church. The Old Church is one of our treasures. The Public Works Department assisted at the Old Church by pumping out the water and removing the old pressure tanks from the well pit. On behalf of Corrales Historical Society, John McCandless then installed a new tank and switches so it’s running again. Thanks everyone.

Shopping Local Makes A Difference. Apparently, we’ve been shopping in Sandoval County and thus keeping our gross receipts taxes (GRT) in pretty good shape, at least in some sectors. GRT is our major source of income and a portion of any money you spend in Corrales or Sandoval County comes back to us to pay for essential services. So, please, keep it up! SEE Sandoval. There are some wonderful outdoor opportunities within our own (vast) county. Check out the Step into Cuba program outlined in the SEE Sandoval September Newsletter. https://www.stepintocuba.org/

Ravenna grass removal a success. Thanks to the volunteers who tackled the project. And we can’t resist sending out pictures of the goats attacking the same project.

Movie filmed in Corrales Community Library.  Entitled The Short History of the Long Road, this movie was partially filmed in the Corrales Library and is now available on Amazon Prime.

Corrales Poet Laureate! Rudy Miera, local resident, author and poet, will be helping to bring the joys of poetry to our Village as our Corrales Poet Laureate. If you know Rudy, you know he will share his amazing positive energy with all of us. As a kickoff, he and children’s librarian Melisa Chandler have organized a Youth Poetry Contest. The poem prompt is “Life in New Mexico is...” Children and teens can submit anytime between September 11 and October 11. Please spread the word and see the poster below. For more about Rudy and a full listing of Corrales Library activities, this month, go to: https://www.corraleslibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Library-Sept…

COVID-19 update. No new cases in Corrales for 15 days and numbers statewide are coming down. Kudos and stick with the Big Five: 1) stay home, 2) safe distance, 3) small groups, 4) wear a mask and 5) wash your hands. Easy? Not at all - all of this isolation is hard on people. Americans are not always good at asking for help, but this is a really tough time, so please, don’t suffer alone. Your community cares about you. Reach out. The professional counselors at New Mexico Crisis and Access Line at 1-855-NMCRISIS (Toll Free) are there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Village Clerk Aaron Gjullin helps bring this message to you every week. He makes sure the links work, inserts the pictures and checks my grammar before posting it on the web and sending it out via email. Thank you Aaron.

This weekend promises weather in the low 80’s and of course, the Corrales Growers Market on Sunday from 9-12. It should be lovely out there on our paths and byways. Whatever you do, stay safe and enjoy yourselves, Corrales-style.
