Mayor's Message for September 22nd, 2023

Yom Kippur

Friday is Elephant Appreciation Day.

Saturday is Dogs in Politics Day.

Yom Kippur begins on Sunday the 24th.

At the last Village Council meeting we accepted the grant from the legislature for $50,000.00 to plan, design, and construct a membrane bioreactor for wastewater treatment to be for irrigation on municipal property in Corrales. This is obviously not enough money for all that, but it is a start. This will probably cover a preliminary engineering report to consider the plan of contaminated water reuse after treatment. Ultimately the Village hopes to use such treated water for irrigating soccer fields, spraying dusty roads, irrigation in the Bosque, and for fire suppression. It is a long-term plan, but we can use the water. The anticipated plant would be small and could probably be buried in the Public Works area north of the Rec Center where we have good access to the sewer pipes and sprinkler systems and wouldn’t disturb any residential area.

We are coming up on election season. The councilors running for re-election are unopposed, but we have a bond election that voters need to come out and vote on. The bond questions ask for funds for: 1) completion of the fire substation on Loma Larga to improve fire suppression coverage for the Village, 2) money for roads and drainage, and, 3) funds for farmland conservation easements to purchase the development rights of a property in perpetuity. That property can only be used as farmland. There is a good discussion and FAQs on the website about Farmland Conservation Easements you can view at website.  The questions, if approved by the voters, will not increase the Village mill levy, but will provide $4 million in capital to use for the Village. Bond funds for fire suppression and roads and drainage are more often used as matching funds for other grant funds.

Have you or a family member served in the armed forces? Please bring in a photo that we can copy and use in our “Hometown Heroes” exhibit in the Village administrative office. All photos must be received by 10/27/23. This exhibit will be displayed November 1st – December 4th in honor of all those who serve. We thank you for your service.

The Village of Corrales is partnering with Operation Gratitude and local area schools to send special "Thank You" letters, pictures and drawings to those who serve our country. This organization sends approximately 500,000 letters annually. Anyone can participate in this opportunity to show support for all who serve. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

  • Do not date your letters, it can take months before they are received.
  • Please avoid talking about politics and excessive religious content. However, it is fine to say that you are praying for them.
  • The troops love to receive photographs and drawings – NO GLITTER OR STICKERS PLEASE.
  • Share information about your community, state, family, hobbies, pets etc. These troops miss their families, friends, and pets. Sharing with them about yours could lift their spirits.

ADULTS should include address and/or email. CHILDREN only include first names and age.

Do not put your letters in envelopes, they go through a screening process at processing.

Bring your letters, drawings and/or photographs to the Village offices between now and December 8th and we will send everything to Operation Gratitude for distribution. For more information, please contact Deputy Clerk, Skye DeVivi at sdevivi [at] corrales-nm.org or by phone at 505-897-0502 ext 213.

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

Covid seems to be here to stay. It is recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive a covid vaccination. You can get more information and find a location to receive your vaccination at https://goodtimes.vaccinenm.org/. Because the vaccine has now been made commercial,  Corrales Fire will not be able to provide vaccinations, but are trying to partner with a commercial pharmacy to provide several drive thru clinics. Deputy Chief Lattin is still available to help you with questions and finding a vaccine appointment by calling 505-702-4182.

It is also recommended everyone receive a flu shot in October, and RSV vaccines are now available for adults age 60 and older. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are unsure what vaccinations you should be receiving.

Covid test kits are still available in the lobby of the Administration building. Each box contains four test kits.
