Mayor's Message for September 24th, 2021

Old Church New Floor

Fall is here, with the feel of cool mornings, the sound of geese overhead and the smell of green chile roasting. It’s all good in Corrales.

This weekend, hie thee to the Old Church for pie! Visit the Old Church Patio on Saturday and Sunday, 10-4 for note cards, a quilt raffle, gifts, and delicious homemade pie. (CHS quotes David Mamet: “Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.”) In October, return to the Old Church for the Fine Arts Show (October 2-10), which will continue online from October 11-31.

While at the Old Church, marvel at the completely redone wooden floors. Many thanks to John McCandless and the volunteers who did such a wonderful job.

Don't forget to Vote for the 2021 Corrales Pet Mayor! Lots of great candidates to choose from (https://www.corralesharvestfestival.com/vote-for-pet-mayor/). Voting ends tomorrow (September 25th) at 6pm. All proceeds benefit Corrales Animal Services. The Albuquerque Journal had a great writeup about the Corrales Pet Mayor this morning as well.

Don’t forget The Friends of the Corrales Library (FOCL) book sale on October 2 and 3rd, 9-4 in La Entrada Park. Also, FOCL needs book sale volunteers! Sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44a4a92da5ffc70-october or email focl [at] corraleslibrary.org. Meet people, have fun, buy books!

COVID – Corrales is still getting a case or more almost daily and some are very sick. We must stay safe and wear masks. The better news is that 70% of New Mexicans are fully vaccinated and Commander Lattin reports our vaccination clinics are doing a boom business. Rising vaccination rates mean declining case numbers. The FDA has approved booster shots and the CDC and State approvals should be coming within the next few days. We will get the message out once we have more information. If approval does go through, the Village will be working to reopen its larger vaccine clinics. If you have questions, reach out to Commander Lattin at (505) 702-4182 or tlattin [at] corrales-nm.org

On September 29 at 12 noon, UNM will be hosting a Spanish language seminar, “Surviving the Stress of COVID 19.” The link to join is: https://hsc-unm.zoom.us/j/96970733112.

Last Sunday’s race event, sponsored by Kiwanis (Corrales Ditch Run) and Dave Gives Back, was a huge success. The weather was superb (complete with short rainstorm), 383 runners took part, and the execution of the 3 races (4 if you count the wonderful kids’ run) was flawless. Volunteers made it look seamless and local sponsors were so generous. I got to give out awards. Kiwanis and Dave Gives Back also wanted to thank the Corrales Parks and Recreation, Police, and Fire Departments. The organizers raised twice as much money to fund Kamp Kiwanis and Search and Rescue efforts. Way to go!

Sadly, the Village is saying good-bye to our Village Clerk, Aaron Gjullin. Aaron will be returning to his PhD studies and medical school. Aaron has done an outstanding job, as many of you know, and helped our Village work better in many ways. Congratulations to Aaron, but we will miss him. The job description for Village Clerk, an appointed position.

The Corrales Council Meeting is Tuesday, September 28, at 6:30 via zoom. The Agenda and Public Packet will be available. The Village hopes a lower-case count will support a return to hybrid meetings (both in-person and zoom) in October.

This weekend it’s supposed to be in the 80’s. Great weather to get out and enjoy this beautiful season. For more information on what’s up in town, see: https://visitcorrales.com. Sunday morning, from 9-12, visit the Corrales Growers’ Market. Whatever you do, keep yourself safe and have some fun, Corrales-style.
