Mayor’s Message for September 25th, 2020

Master Gardeners

Even though temperatures will be in the 90’s, the first weekend of fall is here and our New Mexican skies are looking bluer. We can celebrate National Pancake Day tomorrow, followed immediately by No Excuses Day on Sunday. You cannot make this stuff up.

2020 General Election.  New Mexico offers several ways to vote. You can vote in person either on Election Day, November 3 or early vote at the Corrales Community Center from October 17-31 or by absentee ballot. Already, almost 275,000 New Mexicans have asked for an absentee ballot. Please go to NMVOTE.ORG for details and deadlines. Whatever your preference, the first step is to register to vote. If you are already registered, update your voter registration and check to make sure your registration is correct.

Along with election time comes political signs. Please do not vandalize or remove others’ political signs. Everyone has the right to display a sign in support of a candidate, so long as it is not in a public right of way and a private landowner has granted permission. Thanks.

Pet Mayor: It’s time for our Pet Mayor fundraiser. All proceeds go to benefit Corrales Animal Services. This year, you can talk up your candidate by submitting a 15-20 second video ($2.00 minimum bid) to https://www.corralesharvestfestival.com/. I can’t wait to see them all. Then, let the voting begin! Voting will end on Oct. 31st. For your viewing pleasure, below are a few pet mayors from the past.

Old Church Annual Fine Arts Show. The 32nd Fine Arts Show, sponsored by Corrales Historical Society and Corrales Society of Artists is on, but with a “pandemic twist.” It will be a month-long virtual event, from October 1-31. A juried show, it will feature 50 of our finest artists. You will be able to contact the artists online to get that special piece of art. To see the whole show online, go to www.CorralesOldChurchShow.com. Support our artists and the Old Church itself (25% of all sales help maintain this treasure). https://www.whofish.org/events/Corrales/NM/32nd_Annual_Old_Church_Fine_Arts_Online_Show/5043016.aspx

The Master Gardeners have been working to create a Pollinator Garden in La Entrada Park next to the Corrales Community Library. It will be wonderful to see the garden in full bloom. Thank you.

LAST CALL FOR CENSUS. The Census ends next Wednesday, September 30. Even a 1% undercount deprives us of $650 million dollars we should be getting for schools, food, firefighters and first responders, teachers and nurses, roads and infrastructure. Do it now and urge others to be counted! 2020census.gov; 844-330-2020(Eng.), 844-468-2020 (Span.).

COVID update. The state is seeing a slight uptick in cases. Fall and winter brings a new phase in our battle against the virus. Stay vigilant and keep doing the 5 things that help: 1) wear a mask, 2) social distance, 3) small groups only 4) avoid indoor exposure and 5) wash your hands.  Our businesses are trying so hard to survive and thrive. The best way to help them is to wear a mask and stay safely distanced when you are in their establishments. They will thank you so much.

Apply for a small business CARES act grant now. For an application and information, please go to our Village website under COVID 19 resources. If you have questions, contact Tanya Lattin at (505) 702-4182.

This weekend the Corrales Growers’ Market will be open from Sunday, 9-12. There’s a new restaurant, C3’s Bistro (4940 Corrales Road) to try. Casa Perea (4829Corrales Road) is having an outdoor market on Sunday afternoon. Southwest Animal Rescue thrift store (3701 Corrales Road) has just reopened. Why not just cruise our main road and look for (COVID safe) opportunities? For more information and details on the “Starry Daze Business Booster Bingo” program, please go to visitcorrales.com. Whatever you do this weekend, please have some fun and be safe, Corrales-style.
