At approximately 5:18PM on Monday January 22nd, Corrales Police Officers were dispatched to a residence on Los Arboles Verde RD at the South end of the Village in reference to a report of a shooting. Officers arrived within four minutes and located a female subject laying on the ground outside of the house with what appeared to be several gunshot wounds and no apparent signs of life.
The victim was later identified as a 29-year-old Albuquerque woman who had been residing at the Corrales home, and the suspect has been determined to be a 55-year-old Albuquerque man who had also been staying at the house and had fled from the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement officers.
The victim’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of her next-of-kin. The suspect has been identified as Charles “Chuck” Kauffmann and CPD investigators are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for him on charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon and Tampering With Evidence.
Kauffmann was last seen driving a black Kia Rio (NM license plate #BKGF24), which has been reported stolen by the Corrales homeowner, and New Mexico and Arizona law enforcement officials are on the lookout for Kauffmann and the vehicle. Anyone with information concerning Kauffmann’s whereabouts is asked to call Corrales Police at 505-891-7226. Kauffmann should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public.
A Code Red shelter in place warning had been issued to area residents until it was determined that the suspect was no longer in the area and that there was no apparent ongoing threat to nearby residents.
The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office assisted CPD with securing the scene and attempting to locate the suspect, CPD investigators obtained a search warrant for the premises and the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau executed that warrant and processed the crime scene.
