Fall is officially here this Saturday. We have had both summer and fall weather this week. It has been wonderful to get some extra rain.
Josephine Darling, Children’s Librarian at Corrales Elementary, reported at Kiwanis that almost 25% of all the children at the elementary school (96 and counting), have signed up to be part of the Reading Buddy program. This terrific program centers of older kids helping the younger ones to become better readers. What a great success story. With those numbers, she may have need for qualified volunteers. If you want to see if you can help, please contact Corrales Elementary at (505) 792-7400 and leave a message for Ms. Darling. This kind of programming really helps all the children in our community. Thanks to all involved.
Look and see what has happened in front of the Courthouse/Council Chambers! Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Siverts, with help from Public Works Director Mike Chavez and Danny Lovato, have built a fabulous raised planter bed from recycled materials and the Master Gardeners have filled it with beautiful plants, just in time for the Harvest Festival next weekend. We are really looking pulled together around here. Thanks to all of you who have noted how nice we are looking. And once again, kudos to our great staff and to the Master Gardeners for all their hard work to keep this place looking in top form.
This weekend is the Corrida/Ditch Run. Be on the lookout for runners this Sunday racing in either a half marathon, a half marathon relay, 10K or 5K. Our very own fire department will be running in the half marathon relay this year, so we will definitely be cheering them on. Today is the last day to register! So, if you are interested in taking part in any of the races offered this year head over to https://register.chronotrack.com/r/38391 to sign up. Or if you have already signed up and need to pick up your race packet then head over to The Village Mercantile tomorrow (9/22/18) between 1pm-5pm. You can also pick up your packet the day of the race (9/23/18) at the Recreation Center starting at 6:30am. If you have any questions or just want to check out some information on the run, head over to https://corridadecorrales.wordpress.com/. Don’t forget that if you are running this year that the half marathon starts at 7:30am, the 10K starts at 8:00am, and the 5K starts at 8:30. We wish all the runners the best of luck this weekend and we will be cheering you on!
Congratulations to the Sandia Bar, whose grand reopening took place this week.
This Sunday, head on over to the Grower’s Market (maybe grab a burrito as a reward after the Ditch Run?). Then just one more week until the big Village-wide event, the Harvest Festival! Lots of ads and information throughout town. It should be a blast! Remember, traffic through town on Corrales Road will be limited, so plan accordingly.
