Public Works repairing bridge at West Ella

The Public Works Department is currently staffed with four full-time persons. The responsibilities of the department include the maintenance of 62 miles of roadway, both paved and dirt/gravel, drainage along public right-of-ways, signage, maintenance of municipal buildings, upkeep of the landscaping of public grounds and maintenance of heavy equipment.

The department is funded primarily through the general fund, although funding from a gas tax distribution is placed in a special street fund for road improvements. Additional work is conducted through cooperative agreements with the county and the state. These cooperative agreements usually fund road-paving projects.

Members of the crew can often be seen on the road grader or the bobcat, or they can be found repairing fences, cleaning up debris from roadsides, watering trees and landscaping, and replacing street signs. They work in all kinds of weather and are always there to fix anything that has gone awry from potholes to light bulbs. Give them a wave if you see them.

If you need to excavate in a public-right-of-way or need a barricade permit, please fill out the form found at the bottom of this page (or on the forms directory HERE) and return it to the Public Works Department at the Village offices with the appropriate fees and maps.
