Code Enforcement

The department also performs Code Enforcement activities.

The role of a Code Enforcement Officer is to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the Village of Corrales by investigating and successfully resolving reported code violations.  The Code Enforcement Officer prefers to educate the public about the code first and to obtain voluntary compliance on all issues through a professional and courteous manner. They work to provide positive customer service to all citizens and bring properties into compliance with applicable codes.

The Code Enforcement Officer primarily focuses on and investigates code violations reported to this office by citizens, which means that their work is mostly reactive, and complaint driven. The Officer will also act in a proactive manner if an obvious code violation is noticed.  Once a potential zoning violation complaint or inquiry has been received, staff conducts an investigation. If warranted, staff proceeds with notification to the property owner and/or residents of the violation and the need to remediate the offense.

Here are the steps/procedure of notification of a violation.

1. 15-day Courtesy notice (property owner can call officer with questions or if more time is needed.)
2. 15-day Official Notice of Violation (if no response, next item property owner will receive)
3. Unresolved complaints may ultimately be cited to Municipal Court or District Court as a criminal offense.
4. Court Date(s). Now under Court purview for resolution.
